5 Ways to Re-Imagine Active Aging

1. Understand Brain Fitness

Yesterday, Harvard neurospsychiatrist Dr. John Ratey spoke to the ICAA Conference audience about how important physical fitness is to brain wellness. For more information from Harvard on how these two important areas intersect, click here.

2. Educate Senior Loved Ones

You can do your part to educate senior loved ones on the benefit of exercise. Whether you’re an activity director, senior residence owner, or a health professional,  exploring active aging with patients/residents and their family may help. 3. Get Creative

Get creative with your favorite seniors! Take a walk, do a little dancing, or reintroduce them to their favorite childhood activity.

If you’re unsure about your senior’s level of physical fitness and ability, talk to their doctor. You can come up with a fitness plan that’s right for them.

Three Ways to Go Purple for November Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

It’s nearly time for us to “Go Purple with a Purpose” for Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness and Caregivers Month! Are you ready? The Passport for Wellness team sure is!

President Ronald Reagan designated November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month in 1983. At the time of the proclamation, fewer than 2 million Americans suffered from Alzheimer’s. As we’re writing to you today, the number of people with the disease has soared to nearly 5.4 million. It’s time that we change that.

November is also dedicated to caregivers of those afflicted by Alzheimer’s Disease, and the Alzheimer’s Association (http://www.alz.org) wants you to know that you’re not alone. Whether you or a friend need information about the early stages of Alzheimer’s, or how to face the challenge of middle to late-stage caregiving, resources like the Alzheimer’s Association are devoted to helping you.

1. Find Your Local Alzheimer’s Walk and Raise Awareness

You can find a local Alzheimer’s Walk near you by visiting the Alzheimer’s Association Find a Walk link here. This is one of the best ways to get involved in Alzheimer’s Awareness and Prevention in your local community and raise money for the cause in the process. Remember, the end of Alzheimer’s truly starts with you!

2. Get Support with the Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline

Have questions? Aren’t sure where to turn? The ALZ.org 24/7 helpline was designed to assist caregivers and loved ones across America. Tell your friends, and call toll free anytime day or night at 1-800-272-3900 for help and support, or visit this link for more information.

3. Know the 10 Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease

You can do your part to help a friend or loved one if you suspect the onset of Alzheimer’s or dementia. Click here to learn about the 10 signs, which include memory loss that disrupts daily life, changes in mood or personality, or new problems with words in speaking or writing. You can also use this resource to determine what’s considered typical aging, and what indicates further investigation by a health professional.

The Importance of Staying Mentally and Physically Fit

Active Aging is all about being physically active – but don’t forget the mental component! Staying mentally sharp is a critical aspect of healthy aging, too.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States and affects millions of people every day.

The disease is trying for seniors, their families, and their communities, but there’s good news. You can slow and even prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s with simple, regular active aging sessions.

Exercise and Alzheimer’s Prevention

The Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation stresses the value of exercise for senior citizens. In fact, they state that regular physical exercise can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s by up to 50%! It also greatly reduces memory loss and cognitive decline.

Brain Aerobics

What can be better than physical exercise? Mental exercise! The ARPF also reports that mental exercise can reduce your chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease by up to 70%. Engaging in regular “brain aerobics” is vital for staying mentally sharp.

“Brain Aerobics” are defined by these three characteristics:

  • It engages your attention.
  • It involves more than one of your senses.
  • It breaks a routine activity in an unexpected, nontrivial way.

A healthy social life, healthy diet, and getting enough sleep also play a part in keeping seniors mentally healthy and fit.

Eat Healthy, Stay Strong

Malnutrition and muscle loss is a problem in the senior population. It’s important to eat healthy and stay active to combat this prevalent issue.

If you are 50 or older, you are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition due to inadequate food consumption and the body’s decreased effectiveness in processing nutrients. Poor nutrition and not exercising can cause muscle loss. In fact, about half of older adults have significant muscle loss which can impact overall health.
